In the recent selection of the Top 50 Pizza outside Italy, Ljubljana’s Verace has advanced by several places, and the city has received a new representative on the prestigious list, Pop’s Pizza. Like Pop’s Burger Place, which we recently said has the best burger in Ljubljana, Pop’s Pizza was opened by Svetozar Raspopović, a legendary caterer from Vojvodina. Raspopović started modestly, with a small inn, and came to Ljubljana in 1998 where he opened the restaurant As. As is the first modern Ljubljana restaurant that offered dishes in sequences and attracted Slovenian powerful people of various professions. While As is today a fairly average restaurant with a beautiful interior, Pop’s Burger and Pop’s Pizza are among the most popular and best restaurants in Ljubljana.
On Sunday we headed to Pop’s Pizza bar to try the 43rd best pizza outside of Italy. The restaurant is located in a beautiful location in the city center along the river Ljubljanica. The interior of the restaurant is dominated by a bread oven, so you can watch the pizza masters make dishes. Pop’s makes Neapolitan pizzas with ingredients from Italy so on the pizzas you can find San Marzano tomatoes, Buffalo CSR, Fior di Latte, Pecorino and many more quality ingredients. Pop’s has a dozen pizzas on offer, and we chose Sofia, reminiscent of a margherita, Mr. Sinatra with Friulli Pancetta and La Penelope with Ricotta and mushrooms. All pizzas have a very fine dough with high airy edges and a thin middle, so it is not tough at all. As in Verace, the pizzas are light and enough to fill you up for a good part of the day.
The offer of drinks in Pop’s Pizza differs from the offer of drinks in Pop’s Burger even though they have the same owner. While the burger bar is more craft beer oriented, the pizza bar is more cocktail and wine oriented. However, we drank Bevo’s beer and homemade lemonade with our pizzas because the wine list did not impress us too much.
Pizzas are priced between 10 and 14 euros, which is understandable and correct for the center of a European city and the 43rd best pizza outside of Italy. With fair prices and very good pizzas, Pop’s is extremely popular and during our stay the sun terrace was filled to capacity, and in front of the restaurant a queue of about thirty people formed patiently waiting for their place. Ljubljana thus got something that few European cities can boast of, two extraordinary pizzerias within a ten minute walk.
